Full Description

Trial trenching carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2013 following on from geophysical survey (NJ80SW0461) ahead of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route, a number of archaeological features, mainly pits, across this area. Two pits, in trenches SL0468 and SL0473 contained small amounts of charcoal and some metalworking waste. A sub-triangular pit in trench SL0481 contained flint flakes and chips along with charcoal, and hazelnut shell. An irregular-shaped elongated feature in trench SL0483 had vertical sides and edge set stones and was suggested to be a possible cist burial. Two pits in SL0484 and four pits in SL0491 were thought to be stone holes of modern date. A linear cut in trench SL0486 contained large amounts of charcoal and fragments of hazelnut shell. Two pits were recorded in trench SK0487, one of which contained modern pottery. A pit in trench SL0499 produced a sherd of whiteware and small fragments of possible slag. A sherd of glass, metalworking waste and a flint chip were recovered from a pit in trench SL0500. A cluster of three pits in trench SL0493, one in trench SL0494, one in trench SL0497 and two in trench SL0498 all contained probable modern material. To the north a possible terminus of a linear feature was recorded in trench SL0508. Whilst many of these features appear to be modern, the presence of nutshell, large amounts of charcoal and flint flakes from some features also indicate prehistoric activity in the area. Further excavation was carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2014 in four areas. No archaeological features were recorded in SL/0003A (centred circa NJ8486202035), SL/003C (centred NJ 84832 02160) and SL/0003D (centred NJ 84781 02350). Bronze Age features were recorded in area SL/0003B - see NJ80SW0469.
