Full Description
Excavation was carried out by Headland Archaeology at four locations at Gairnhill (also NJ80SE0589, NJ80SE0591, NJ80SE0579) in 2014 ahead of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route. Investigations at this location (site SL/004B) recorded a Middle Bronze Age roundhouse, comprising a ring of postholes giving an overall diameter of circa 10m, with an entrance porch facing south. An inner post-ring of five postholes and two post pads would have supported the roof. A small hearth was situated slightly off-centre. Charcoal samples from the hearth produced a radiocarbon date of 1420-1270 BC. A large ring ditch, roughly paved with sub-rounded to sub-angular stones, was present on the eastern side of the structure.
