Full Description

Excavation was carried out by Headland Archaeology at four locations at Gairnhill (also NJ80SE0589, NJ80SE0593, NJ80SE0579) in 2014 ahead of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route. This investigations in this area (site SL/004A) uncovered the remains of a burnt mound dated to the late 3rd and early 2nd millenia BC. A rectangular wood-lined trough had been cut into the buried land surface. Timber from the central base plank was radiocarbon dated to 2130-1930 BC. Around the trough were three arrangements of stones (structures) which appear to delineate the arrangement of the subsequent burnt material, water channel, and other features related to water management. The mound which overlay the trough, ditches and structures, was formed of burnt material and heat-affected rocks. Charcoal from the mound was dated to 2130-1910 BC.

Period Notes
Radiocarbon dating: SUERC-58025, charcoal from burnt mound, calibrated to 2130-1910 BC; SUERC-58026, timber from trough, calibrated to 2130-1930 BC.
