Full Description
Trial trenching carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2013 following earlier geophysical survey (NJ80SE0565) ahead of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route recorded four features in two trenches in this area. Trench SL0390 revealed a deposit with small amounts of charcoal and suggestions of in situ burning, and two pits, both containing charcoal but no other finds. Trench SL0390 uncovered a feature which may have been a tree bole containing a charcoal rich spread and a single piece of burnt worked flint. Although this was the only dateable artefact from these trenches, all of the features were thought to be contemporary given their location on the edge of a previous route of the River Dee. The features show some similarity to features south of the river dated to the Mesolithic period (Aberdeenshire HER NJ80SE0132) and it is possible that they are contemporary. Three trenches were targeted on an geophysical survey anomaly interpreted as a possible enclosure, no features equating to this were found. Augering was carried out to establish the line of the northern bank of the Dee in the past. Further excavation was carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2014. Of early historic date, a single isolated grain-drying kiln was recorded . It was on an elongated oval plan, the eastern end lined with roughly shaped river cobbles. Across the base of the kiln was a charcoal rich deposit which contained abundant charred barley, radiocarbon dated to AD350-540.
