Full Description
Trial trenching evaluation of the playing fields of the Academy was carried out by MAS in July - August 2006 ahead of proposed building works. Two cairns are depicted on the site on the OS 1st edition map (see NJ80SE0019 and NJ80SE0495). Initial trenching, over the sites of these cairns, uncovered no cairn material or associated features. However, landscaping for the playing fields in the 1960s appears to have preserved some original ground levels. Further trial trenching evaluation was carried out by MAS in August 2007. No archaeological features were uncovered, and the results suggested that the natural surface has been damaged by the cut and fill process used to form the terraces.
