Full Description

A watching brief was carried out by CFA Archaeology Ltd during topsoil stripping for a pipeline diversion near Westhill, Aberdeenshire in July 2009. Fourteen field walls were crossed and these included examples of revetting and consumption walls. This work identified broad-rig cultivation remains and a number of isolated archaeological features. Two sites (4 and 5), comprising two isolated pits, one of which contained a single sherd of prehistoric pottery, were subject to a programme of post-excavation analysis. Radiocarbon dates from charred hazel recovered from the fills of these two pits suggest an Early Neolithic date (3940-3660 cal BC) for the isolated pit at Site 4, and a Bronze Age date for the pit at Site 5 (2140-1940 cal BC). A small quantity of undiagnostic pottery was recovered from the pit at Site 4, and both pits produced hazel charcoal, with oak also being recovered from Site 4.

Period Notes
NEOLITHIC DATE FROM SITE 4: 3940–3660 cal BC at 2 sigma (SUERC 26932 and 26933); BRONZE AGE DATE FROM SITE 5: 2140–1940 cal BC at 2 sigma (SUERC 26935). The calibrated dates have been calculated using OxCal 4.1
