Full Description

Site of a farmstead. On the 1st edition OS map it is shown as a shallow C-shaped building with a building to the south and two others to the east, one of which appears to be linked to a pond to the north. By the 2nd edition map the C-shaped building and the eastern buildings have been merged into a larger structure. The dyke on the west side of the track to the farm is unusual in that a lade, or stone culvert runs immediately underneath it. This feeds a number of stone water troughs set into the wall. A photographic survey of the buildings was conducted in 2008, following notification of a planning application. Subsequently, a full programme of historic building recording was conducted by AOC in June 2008. The survey identified that the farm developed around 1865 during an agricultural boom and followed the building styles of emerging farms of the period. Significant development occurred circa 1900 with the continued growth and expansion of the Skene parish agricultural economy. Though not to such an extent as these earlier periods, the farm continued to expand well into the 20th century and remains a good example of the Aberdeenshire farm house and farm of this period. Demolished in 2009 to make way for development. The mill pond and associated structure has been removed. A standing structure survey was carried out in 2010 by MAS of a series of drystone dykes, culverts, troughs and related features associated with the former farmstead prior to the development of the surrounding land for a residential development. The survey concluded that the culverts and troughs North of the farmstead are of pre-1864/5 construction. While culverts below dykes are known elsewhere in Aberdeenshire, no parallels have yet been found to any comparable system of troughs fed by culverted water. Where possible this network of dykes has been retained and incorporated into the new housing development.
