Geophysical survey was carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2012 ahead of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route. This identified a number of features or possible features. At circa NJ 86471 08719 a linear anomaly may be a ditch or earthwork (although there is some possibility that it could be geological it coincides with a field boundary shown on the OS 1st edition map). At NJ 86235 08375 a linear feature was thought most likely to be geological. At NJ 85501 06619 a pattern of curved linear markings suggest medieval or later rig and furrow cultivation. This extends to the south and may be terminated by a ditch-like feature at circa NJ 85331 06427. To the south of the A944 at circa NJ 85427 06019 survey recorded two possible enclosure-like linear features, although it was not clear whether these are archaeological. At NJ 85090 05863 two intersecting ditch-like linear features are probably archaeological. Subsequent trial trenching was carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2013 - a number of possible prehistoric features were recorded - see NJ80SE0577, NJ80SE0579, NJ80NE0557, NJ80NE0559, NJ80NE0561. Features also included furrows in a number of the trenches, and centred on NJ 85553 06794 a spread of scattered pits which appeared to be of post-medieval date. A pit at circa NJ 85897 07793 was concluded to be a tree throw. Further mitigation excavation by Headland Archaeology in 2014 in seven areas between NJ 85895 07741 and NJ 86439 08722 found no archaeological remains. A watching brief during excavation of trial pits in 2008 along the line of the AWPR Southern Leg had recorded no archaeological features.
