Full Description

Site of a beacon. A stone cairn was erected on Brimmond Hill in 1627 as a base for a beacon and a croft (still known as Watchmantbrae in the early 20th Century, named as Watchmountbrae on the OS 2nd edition map NJ80NE0133) set aside for the residence of the keeper. No trace of the cairn (see also NJ80NE0044) could be found by OS site visit in 1961 at which time the croft had also been demolished. Some sources suggest that the beacon was erected in 1627 by Aberdeen Town Council and was one of a chain of beacons to be lit to call the aid of the county during times of war. There has been considerable development on the summit of Brimmond Hill and nothing is now visible of the beacon site. There is now a radio and microwave transmission masts and their attendant buildings at the site. RCAHMS site visit 2002 found no trace was seen of the cottage which was supposedly used as the watchman's house.
