Full Description

One of two short cists found 10 February 1976 during quarrying of a sand hill on Borrowstone Farm, (see NJ80NE0025 for Cist A (also known as Borrowstone Cist 1). This one, Cist B (Borrowstone Cist 2) had a possible pebble floor and large capstone. It contained a decayed skeleton and a beaker. This cist had a large capstone or lid. The north wall of the cist was made up of a single slab, 1.42 metres long and the opposite side was made up of two slabs measuring a total of 1.37 metres. It had clay luted corners, the clay acted as a bonding material. It is one of six short stone cists were found on the site of the quarry at Borrowstone Farm from 1976 to 1984, indicating that the 'Beaker' culture was well established in the vicinity. The term cist refers to the box like shape of the grave. Of the two cists found in 1976 the northern most short cist contained a decayed skeleton, orientated west. During the Bronze Age persons of importance in their community were buried in Stone cists. The body was placed with the knees drawn up to the chin (in a fetal like position). Grave goods also accompanied the individual, like a beaker, objects of flint and fine stone. See also NJ80NE0025, NJ80NE0027, NJ80NE0030, NJ80NE0033 and NJ80NE0034 for other cists found in this quarry.
