Full Description

Site of cist (Borrowstone Cist 5), one of three found in November 1983 during quarrying and excavated, (see also NJ80NE0030 and NJ80NE0034). This cist was made of four large slabs of mica schist, with the internal dimension being one metre long by 0.85 metres wide. Excavation recovered part of a skeleton, a beaker, seven barbed and tanged arrowheads, two unmodified blade knives, two retouched blade knives, a small flake, a worn round scraper and quartz. The flint assemblage from the cist is made from Buchan flint, pale grey to pale orange in colour. The finely made arrowheads indicate that this is an archer's grave. The term cist comes from stone-built coffin-like box. This burial belongs to the 'Beaker' culture that was widespread in Britain in the bronze age in the second millennium BC. The number of cists found in this area indicates that the beaker culture was well established in the vicinity. This is one of a group of six short stone cists were found on the site of the quarry at Borrowstone Farm from 1976 to 1984. See also NJ80NE0025, NJ80NE0027 and NJ80NE0042 for other cists found in this quarry.
