Full Description
A pair of fire pits excavated by CFA in 2019, following on from identification of features during a watching brief within the cable route corridor for the Moray East Offshore Wind Farm (NJ66SE0330). The northern circular pit was concave with a flat base, with a fill containing ash, charcoal and fire-cracked stone. A large flint thumb scraper was recovered from the pit and is likely to have been discarded with the burnt material. The southern pit was irregular in shape with a concave base, uneven sides, with a circular setting of fire-cracked stones lining the pit, and a fill containing charcoal and ash. A sub-oval sandstone cobble tool used as a pounder/grinder was recovered from this pit. Both scraper and cobble tool date to Bronze Age or Early Iron Age, likely to be contemporary with the occupation of the area.
