Full Description
Pit and linear ditch excavated by CFA in 2019 during a watching brief within the cable route corridor for the Moray East Offshore Wind Farm (NJ66SE0330). An individual circular pit measured 0.6 m by 0.2 m deep, with concave sides and a fill containing fire-cracked pebbles and 21 prehistoric pottery sherds from a single round-based collared bowl and a few small fragments from a different vessel. The form and decoration being most similar to Unstan-Ware, with the round base suggestive of an Early Neolithic date. The linear ditch was on a north–south alignment, measured roughly 13 m by 3 m by 0.15 m deep, with a peaty fill containing fire-cracked pebbles. Radiocarbon dating on two separate cereal grains from the pit dated to 3515 BC - 3103 BC, covering the Early Neolithic period. Unstan-Ware Neolithic collared bowls are very rare in North East Scotland, which along with the associated radiocarbon dates, give the pottery remains greater significance.
