Full Description
An isolated fire pit and a pair of pits excavated by CFA in 2019, following on from identification of features during a watching brief within the cable route corridor for the Moray East Offshore Wind Farm (NJ66SE0330). An isolated circular fire pit with a pointed heat affected base had a fill containing charcoal and stones. An oval pit with a concave base had a fill containing angular stone, charcoal, flint debitage, and late Neolithic pottery sherds from five different vessels including Grooved Ware. The other pit was a broadly D-shaped with vertical sides, a truncated concave base, and a fill containing occasional charcoal, small stones, flint debitage and prehistoric pottery, with disturbance from burrowing. The later prehistoric worked flint in both pits included flint flakes and cores, and a long flake of mottled black flint which can be dated to the Late Neolithic.
