Full Description
Site of a long cairn destroyed by agricultural improvements in 1902. It consisted of two parts, distinct although conjoined. At the east end was a circular mound and attached to its west side was an elongated one composed of earth and stones. Two short cists were discovered, one being hexagonal in shape. Comminuted unburnt bones were found in both cists, including the rib of a red deer. An inverted cinerary urn was found in a small cist. Two more cinerary urns were found over cremated bones, not in cists. A beaker (type CA) and a food vessel were also found not in cists. The cairn also produced a few flint scrapers and pieces of flint, their whereabouts now unknown. Nothing was found in the east portion. The east end mound was 18.28 m in diameter, 1.52 m high, the west end 14.63 m long, 7.31 m wide, 0.91 m high. The beaker, 127 mm high, rim diameter 82 mm, had a row of pendant and upright triangles from a zone of slanting lines round the belly and horizontal lines on neck and above base. The food vessel had a herringbone pattern on an internal bevelled rim with herringbone and vertical incised lines in panels on collar and incised diamonds on body. Half of a large stone axe was found amongst the cairn stones. Fieldwalking in this area in 2004 recovered a substantial number of worked flints and 25 pottery fragments, mostly derived from partially burnished, carinated, fluted and lugged open bowls of early Neolithic date.
