Full Description

Site of a townhouse, a harled, L-plan building three storeys high. The architectural details were of 19th century workmanship and the only external indicators of earlier date were the relatively small window openings and a fragment of a dormer pediment in re-use. Although drastically re-modelled the interior retained part of an L-plan arrangement. On the ground floor a range of vaulted cellars was served by a vaulted corridor and the blocked-up remains of the main doorway were located in the re-entrant angle. The evidence of this late 16th century lay-out along with the partial inscription of the pediment established the identity of the builder as Francis Hay, 9th Earl of Erroll and the date 1590. Demolished in 1974. Three plaques now set into a wall in Cross Street (NJ74NW0229) may have come from this building.
