Full Description
A trial trenching evaluation was carried out by AOC Archaeology in February 2025 ahead of proposed housing development. A total of 27trenches were excavated over two areas, with a number of trenches in the southern area targeting the line of an alleged Roman road (NJ72SE0025) depicted on the OS 1st edition map. The only possible remains of this feature, a patch of compact sandy gravel, were found in Trench 12, to the north of the line shown on the historic maps, and it is possible that this is of natural origin. No other archaeological features were observed. A metal detecting survey across the central part of the southern area and spoil from trenches of both areas yielded very few finds, the most interesting being a single square section nail.
