Full Description

A desk based assessment and trial trenching evaluation were carried out by MAS in 2014 ahead of proposed development in this area. Eight trenches were excavated across the area. Lines of rig and furrow were recorded in five of the trenches. A possible pit in Trench 2, which proved to be an animal burrow or stone hole, produced a flint flake and fragment of 19th or 20th century clay pipe. A second flint flake was found unstratified above Trench 7. No other features or artefacts were recorded. The flints indicate some prehistoric activity in the area, but the remains of rig and furrow show that there has been intensive agricultural activity on the site for several hundred years and no features of prehistoric date were identified. An adjacent evaluation carried out in 2018 (NJ72SE0341) recorded furrows on the same alignment as recorded on this site. Roy's Military Map of 1747-55 shows areas of rig and furrow to the north, and these features may also date from around this time. The current farmer's family have farmed in this area since the 18th century.
