Full Description

A number of water channels were recorded by trial trenching evaluation carried out by Headland Archaeology in early 1988 prior to extension of the Waste Water Treatment works. The investigation revealed a belt of infilled water channels located along the northern edge of the Stanners towards the Bass of Inverurie. From the deep accumulations of alluvium a considerable number of medieval pottery sherds and a spindle whorl were recovered. A few isolated features of uncertain origin were identified below alluvium at the lower limit of excavation. The channels encountered appear to mark a former course of the River Don which previously ran near the base of the motte. The pottery identified three principle types, mainly East Coast Redware, Yorkshire Ware and White Gritty ware of 13th-14th century date. A smaller collection of sherds dated from 15th to18th century. Two wood samples taken from the water logged basal channel fills were radiocarbon dated which indicated a late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age and must have been re-worked from older fluvial deposits.
