Full Description

Site of a castle. Until the 1980s the remains comprised the bottom storey of a square angle tower, probably dating to circa 1600. It was constructed of random rubble, with two miniature wide-mouthed type gun-loops below chamfered slit windows, an internal doorway and the remains of a barrel vault. The tower house was 'soundly plundered' on 27th June 1640 by 200 Covenanters, and again in 1645. The recent cottage which ran off to the West side of the tower apparently occupied the area of the original main block and contained early dressed masonry re-used in its windows. Recording of the remains in 1982 ahead of proposed demolition of the cottage indicated that the West wall of the cottage was probably part of the original castle, as it was very thick with rebated and chamfered masonry at its southwest corner. This cottage was demolished in 1983 and a new house built slightly to the east.

Period Notes
Built later 16thC; manor & mill on record in 1574; datestone 1622; plundered 27 June 1640 and again in 1645.
