Full Description
A 10 percent evaluation was undertaken at this site by MAS in November 2009 in advance of a proposed housing development (Midmill Phase 3). This was followed in November and December 2009 with a small-scale excavation of features revealed during the evaluation. In total, 16 trenches were excavated with two areas of possible prehistoric activity being identified (in trenches 2-4 and trenches 11-13). The excavation area was located at the N end of trench 11, extending towards trench 12. An area of fairly uncompacted, grey discoloured sand with occasional lenses of charcoal rich sand coincided with a concentration of prehistoric artefacts, and is interpreted as a prehistoric occupation horizon or possibly a floor. In total, 178 artefacts (157 pottery, 21 flint) were recovered from the occupation horizon. A further 4 sherds from trenches 12 and 13 are probably part of the same spread as are the 7 artefacts in the excavated area which were just on top of the natural but not related to any feature. A barbed and tanged arrowhead and the pottery all suggest a Bronze Age date. Remains of medieval or post-medieval rig and furrow was also noted in the excavation area.
