Full Description

A quartz hammerhead, diorite stone, stone share or sock for a plough. These items were found in area where there were supposedly a series of small mounds, in one of which was found an inverted urn containing bones. Now no trace of mounds and no further information. On the 1st edition OS map what may be the remains of a farmstead are depicted. There are two adjoining rectangular enclosures with trees planted around the edges and what may be a rectangular building next to them shown on the map. A watching brief was carried out over an area of 2973 square metres on the south side of the house named 'Hillhead' (centred on NJ 7440 1553) by MAS in 2010. No finds or features of archaeological significance were revealed.
