Full Description
Remains of features recorded during evaluation in 1996, and excavation in 1996 and 1998 in advance of the work on the A96 Kintore bypass close to Tavelty Farm.
Excavation of in 1996 by CFA excavation of a trench 20 m by 20 m confirmed that the arc of pits identified in previous evaluation were part of a circle of pits, the remains of a circular structure circa 10m in diamter, probably the foundations of a circular timber round-house. Four pits may represent an entrance in the southeast. No artefacts were recovered from this area, although two of the pits contained burnt daub and seeds. The post-ring structure was dated to 190BC - 20AD.
An evaluation was carried out over this site by CFA in 1998 in advance of a proposed sand quarry identified the remains of a possible rectilinear enclosure. This was represented by a shallow ditch circa 0.22 m deep by circa 0.75 m -1.20 m wide, v-shaped in section with the appearance of a palisade slot. The entrance is north-west facing and is defined by the out turning of the perimeter ditch or gully. From the remains uncovered this enclosure is estimated to be approximately 35 m long by 9 m wide. It may be the remains of a mortuary enclosure or possibly even of later Iron Age date.
