An evaluation was carried out over this site by CFA in 1998 in advance of a proposed sand quarry. During this work, the remains of a possible rectilinear enclosure were revealed. This was represented by a shallow ditch circa 0.22 m deep by circa 0.75 m -1.20 m wide, v-shaped in section with the appearance of a palisade slot. The entrance is north-west facing and is defined by the out turning of the perimeter ditch or gully. From the remains uncovered this enclosure is estimated to be approximately 35 m long by 9 m wide. It may be the remains of a mortuary enclosure or possibly even of later Iron Age date. Previously, in 1996, CFA excavated a trench 20 m by 20 m close to Tavelty Farm in advance of the work on the A96 Kintore bypass. This revealed a circle of pits, probably the foundations of a circular timber round-house circa 10 m in diameter. No artefacts were recovered from this area, although two of the pits contained burnt daub and seeds. The post-ring structure was dated to 190BC - 20AD.
