Full Description

Site of cist cemetery, in a large bank of sand. Four short cists were found in 1866 during construction of the road to the Inverurie Paper Mills. One cist was found empty, while another contained two adult male burials covered with oxhide, with their heads at either end of the cist, along with two urns, three flint flakes and part of a bone ring. A third cist contained an adult male lying on his left side with his head towards the east end, with a large beaker behind his back which contained a horn spoon. An infant female skeleton was in the northwest corner of the cist, behind the male skeleton, with her face to east. A small urn was found in the corner behind the skeleton. Both skeletons were covered with an oxhide. A further small cist contained a small beaker and a child's skull, towards the east end of the cist. Beakers are LN Step 5 N (L) and SN Step 5 N3. Cist 1 gave a radiocarbon date of 3835+/-33 BP.
