Full Description

Souterrain and enclosure excavated by CFA in 2019, following on from identification of features during a watching brief within the cable route corridor for the Moray East Offshore Wind Farm (NJ66SE0330). The stone-lined souterrain measured 13 m from the entrance to the terminal in the north, and was up to 1.1 m deep. It was 3.3 m wide externally at the northern end decreasing to 1.2 m at the southern end, and was accessed through a gently sloping entrance 0.7 m wide internally. The entrance was flanked on either side by large orthostats (four to the west five to the east). Internally there were three sets of parallel postholes. Topsoil stripping of the area also revealed the remains of two curvilinear ditches which appeared to form one half of a circular ditched enclosure. The northern arc measured 34 m long and the southern arc measured 27.5 m. The northern ditch ranged in width between 1.5–3 m and depth between 0.22–0.74 m. The southern ditch ranged in width between 1.5–2.4 m and depth between 0.32–0.66 m. The diameter across the enclosure was 24 m externally and enclosed an area of approximately 160 m square. A 9 m wide entrance was located to the east with another possible entrance to the north. The fills were indicative of a natural slow silting up of the ditches. Relatively few finds were recovered. From the fills of the souterrain included a single prehistoric pottery sherd and a piece of daub. Other finds included sherds of prehistoric pottery, at least one of which may be of Neolithic date, five lithics from the enclosure ditch, unstratified quartz fragments, and various possible worked stone objects.
