Full Description

Ring-ditch features including two pits, a possible post-hole, a curvilinear ditch and a linear feature excavated by CFA in 2019, following on from identification of features during a watching brief within the cable route corridor for the Moray East Offshore Wind Farm (NJ66SE0330). The two pits included an irregular shaped pit and a circular pit, probably a fire pit, with charcoal, burnt material, pottery sherds and a fragment of possible worked quartz recovered from the pit. A possible post-hole enclosed by a curvilinear ditch, and a potential linear terminus extending from the edge of the monitored area. The ditch contents had possibly been swept out from the pit or other areas of burning. The ditch had a few highly crushed fragments of hazel nutshell less than 0.5 cm, which were possibly residual from earlier activity. A total of 47 sherds of prehistoric pottery were recovered, of mid Bronze Age to early Iron Age in date. The finds also included lithics likely to be prehistoric date, possible worked stone objects including a possible stone disc. Radiocarbon dating on two separate nutshells from the ditch fill dated to 1536 BC - 1328 BC.
