Full Description
Pit excavated by CFA in 2019, following on from identification of features during a watching brief within the cable route corridor for the Moray East Offshore Wind Farm (NJ66SE0330). The oval pit measured 1.1 m by 0.6 m and 0.15 m deep, with a charcoal rich fill, fire-cracked stones, and interpreted as a fire pit. Sherds of Late Neolithic decorated Grooved Ware pottery and a piece of flint debitage were recorded from the fill. Radiocarbon dating on a single grain of emmer wheat from the pit fill dated to 3641 BC - 3528 BC, which places it in the Early Neolithic period, an earlier date than the pottery types found. The pit was heavily truncated by ploughing.
