Full Description
Pits, fire pits and discrete surfaces excavated by CFA in 2019, following on from identification of features during a watching brief within the cable route corridor for the Moray East Offshore Wind Farm (NJ66SE0330). These features were identified along a northeast-southwest alignment, potentially suggesting an activity spread along an area circa 15 m in length north-south. Compacted pebble surfaces were present throughout the area in feature bases, underlying shallow deposits, along with heat-affected overlying deposits containing ash, frequent charcoal, burnt bone and heat-affected earth. Pits included circular pits with compacted stone-lined bases, concave oval pits with compact pebbled-lined bases and charcoal rich fills. North and south of these were elongated and sub oval pits with steep or variable sides with shallow or flat bases, charcoal rich fills and fire-cracked stones.
