Full Description
An evaluation was carried out at this site in February 2011 by MAS on the site of the former primary school in advance of a proposed housing development. In total, nine trenches were excavated across the site. Due to the terracing of the site when the former primary school was built, there had been massive movements of soil around the site with redeposited soil of over 2m in depth in some evaluation trenches. Where the original buried topsoil was observed, there were small quantities of very abraded small sherds of pottery and china, both 19th Century and 13th/14th Century medieval in date. It is likely that this material was derived from midden manuring and general dumping of rubbish in the ground directly outside the edge of the medieval town. No other finds or features of archaeological significance were observed.
