Full Description

Site of Townhouse. Despite being unexpectedly spared by the Covenanters Army in 1640, this 'pleasant dwelling house', which appears to have been a quadrangular building of considerable size, was demolished in 1779. The Earl of Airlie sold it in 1692 to Duff of Braco. In 1746, the Duke of Cumberland resided in it on route to Culloden. In 1916 fifteen carved stone fragments from the old house were detected built into a house at the Barnyards. The original front stairs and one of its outbuildings still survive in situ within what later became the Duff House walled gardens (NJ66SE0186).
