Full Description

Site of Townhouse/ Library. 'The Turrets', a structure which was described as 'peculiar in style and different from any other building in Scotland'. It is a two and a half storey rectangular house with sloping dormers and crow-stepped gables. Attached to one side of it were two rectangular stair-towers, the lower parts of which were broadly chamfered. The ground floor consisted of a series of vaults. Initially the 'Turrets' served as a townhouse for Lord Banff and later Lady Abercromby. In 1746 the Duke of Cumberland used it as a granary. Public Library erected on site in 1902. Mary Duff, Byron's first love, lived here at one time with her grandmother, Mrs Duff of Hatton.
