Full Description
Site of a market stance depicted on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps. It consisted of two enclosed areas of ground. It was the site of an ancient fair, St Sair's Fair, named after St Serf, held on the Wednesday after the last Tuesday in June. Early records show that the fair was granted in 1591. The OS Name Book (1865-71) recorded that at that time the fair was fast declining from one of the largest markets in northeast Scotland to a 'mere horse market, owing to the opening up of the country by railways'.
