Full Description

Remains of a farmstead and two lime kilns, one at NJ28970769 and the other at NJ28900768. The farm is depicted on the 1st edition OS map as having four roofed buildings, one unroofed building, and three attached enclosures with only the one lime kiln to the north. By the time of the 2nd edition map only two buildings remained roofed. RCAHMS field visit in 1998 recorded that the ruins now vary in their state of preservation with some having walls still standing to gable height, while others are no more than footings. The visible remains included a horse-engine platform, a possible corn-drying kiln and a collapsed limekiln set into the leading edge of a substantial built-up platform (NJ 2897 0769). Site visit 2003 as part of survey of limekilns of upper Donside recorded that the kiln was partially collapsed although the draw hole and two lintels were intact. The kiln measures over 5.2m in external diameter, the bowl 2.8m in internal diameter. Unusually the kiln has a large, oval man-made loading platform built into the rear, measuring 13m long by 11m wide.
