Full Description
Hut circles recorded during a watching brief and excavation carried out by Network Archaeology in 2016 during groundworks for construction of a high pressure gas pipeline between Old Rayne and Jericho (NJ62NE0167). This section of the pipeline contained two substantial arcs of features, probably of prehistoric hut circles, and numerous additional postholes which included at least one possible four-post structure forming a possible annex or porch to the eastern hut circle. More than one phase of occupation was evident and the remains appear to represent a substantial habitation site. Material from the larger hut circle included 163 sherds of mid to late Bronze Age pottery, fuel-ash, slag and various stone artefacts including a Neolithic ground stone axe, two fragments of early Iron Age quern rubber, a cobble tool and nine pieces of worked flint and quartzite. Ten postholes around the circumference of the hut circle were typically spaced 2m apart. A smaller curvilinear feature lay below the hut circle. An early Iron Age saddle quern fragment was found in one of the pits around the hut circle. From the eastern hut circle a total of 230 sherds of pottery were recovered, also burn bone and fuel-ash slag. The possible four-post structure produced a single sherd of mid to late Bronze Age pottery and six other sherds of prehistoric pottery.
Period Notes
Total of 16 samples radiocarbon dated, results estimating that activity began between 1090 and 1025 cal BC, continuing for maximum of 105-310 years.
