Full Description
Pits and post-holes recorded during a watching brief and excavation carried out by Network Archaeology in 2016 during groundworks for construction of a high pressure gas pipeline between Old Rayne and Jericho (NJ62NE0167). Four possible post-holes, two pits and a layer that may have been the truncated remains of a hearth, were recorded. The possible hearth comprised a patched of scorched subsoil which had two fragments of Neolithic pottery baked into its surface. One of the postholes contained a possible stone grinding slab and 48 sherds of mid to late Bronze Age pottery. Two furrows crossed the area of excavation, on a north-northwest to south-southeast alignment. From an underlying layer the fill of the eastern furrow produced 14 residual sherds of Neolithic pottery.
