Full Description
A cluster of five pits, possibly hearths, recorded during a watching brief and excavation carried out by Network Archaeology in 2016 during groundworks for construction of a high pressure gas pipeline between Old Rayne and Jericho (NJ62NE0167). The five pits were all hear affected, and all produced fragments of middle Neolithic pottery, pit 7101 yielding 375 sherds which probably included the remains of at least two substantially complete vessels. The pottery also includes a possible transitional ware between early Neolithic carinated bowls and middle Neolithic impressed ware, indicating a mid-fourth millennium date. A sixth pit, some distance from the main group, may be of different date, the presence of burnt material and worked, but unburnt, flint suggesting the pit may have been a temporary feature. The flint included a rough Levallois type core.
Period Notes
Five radiocarbon dates, SUERC-76136-42 and SUERC-76355. Collectively the results suggest pit activity began 3760-3120 cal BC, lasting probably for 120-560 years
