Full Description
Pits and post-holes recorded during a watching brief carried out by Network Archaeology in 2016 during groundworks for construction of a high pressure gas pipeline between Old Rayne and Jericho (NJ62NE0167). Excavation recorded an arc of 26 pits and postholes which appeared to be the base of a truncated hit circle. Beyond thus were a further nine postholes, two pits and a later stakehole. A single piece of undated worked flint was recovered from topsoil along with a fragment of medieval pottery. The features produced eight abraded prehistoric body sherds and a fragment of iron. Regularly spaced remnant furrows, running north-south and circa 7m apart, were visible within the pipeline working width. Features on the site were heavily truncated by later ploughing.
