Full Description
Site of a Priory founded by Malcolm III by charter to the Culdees in 1080. In the early 13th century it came under the Church of Rome. It originally consisted of one oratory for public worship, one dining room and one dormitory. The Culdees and monks of Monymusk were converted to canons in 1300 when the Church and Bishop of St Andrews usurped their lands and possessions. In 1556 the then prior converted to the Protestant faith. With the coming of the Reformation the priory was abolished and the lands seized and broken up. Stones from the priory are said to have been used in the building of the House of Monymusk. Vague traces of the buildings could be seen in 1722 circa 20yds northeast of present church but are said to have been dug up in 1726. Small excavation revealed middens.
