Following on from a trial trenching evaluation in 2016 (NJ56NE0105) a further supplementary evaluation was carried out by MAS in January 2023.

Following on from a trial trenching evaluation in 2016 (NJ56NE0105) a further supplementary evaluation was carried out by MAS in January 2023. An area 27.5 x 14 m was excavated in the southwest corner of the development site, straddling the location of features revealed in the 2016 Trench 1. The furrows of rig and furrow cultivation were exposed running northeast-southwest, the furrows being 1.5 to 2 m wide. They were identifiable with the furrows previously recorded in the 2016 trenches. A clay drain ran along the base of the most southerly furrow. Six areas of small shallow patches of dark grey/black were recorded between the furrows. These features would have been on the existing ground surface of the cultivated ridge on which the soil ploughed from the furrows was built up. These may represent the discoloration caused by rotted out vegetation from the first sods turned onto the rig. No artefacts were found in any of the features. Smears of charcoal were found, but without any structured charcoal.
