Burnt mound discovered during trial trenching evaluation carried out by CFA Archaeology between September 2022 and August 2023 on a cable route and access tracks associated with Moray West Offshore Wind Farm Onshore Cable Route (NJ56SE0173). Subsequent excavation showed that this was only partly within the development corridor , so its full extent and shape was uncertain but it appeared to be sub-circular in plan, measuring 10.3 m by at least 6 m. It consisted of friable dark brownish-black silty clay with a large concentration of heat affected stone and charcoal inclusions. The burnt material was sealed by a layer that appeared to be hill wash. At the southwestern corner of the mound was a sub-oval pit, its function uncertain as its potential relationship with the mound. Six environmental samples from the mound and pit produced concentrated deposits of carbonised plant remains, primarily charcoal fragments of alder, birch and hazel, but there was no evidence from the samples to determine the activity associated with the mound. Radiocarbon dating from the burnt mound gave dates in the range 2112-1900 BC, and from the pit 2033-1894 BC.
