Full Description
A trial trenching evaluation was carried out by MAS in April 2016 ahead of proposed construction of a new warehouse. Five trenches were excavated across the field, recorded rig and furrow (all orientated northeast-southwest) over most of the field. A stony spread at the north end of Trench 1 on the western side of the field was thought to possibly be the stone scatter from the cairn to the northwest destroyed when the windmill (NJ56NE0002) was built. However, excavation found no evidence that this stony spread was of any antiquity. Towards the south end of the field the same trench revealed a cluster of small shallow features, three of which contained some evidence of burning, but no artefacts. It is not clear whether these features are archaeological or modern. It is recommended that a watching brief is carried out over the southwest corner of the development area. A supplementary evaluation was carried out by MAS in 2023 (NJ56NE0339) in this southwest corner.
