Full Description

Farmstead, still in use, depicted on historic OS maps. It is shown on the 1st edition OS map as six rectangular buildings with two associated enclosures, and a limekiln to the east. On the 2nd edition OS map three of the buildings have been removed, another building added to the west and a well added to the south. Current maps show one roofless building, but the others have since been replaced by later farmstead buildings. A field survey by RCAHMS in 1998 recorded that the remains of most of the earlier buildings could be identified as grass-grown stone wall-footings. The survey also noted a lintelled subterranean passage, possibly a potato store, 2.1 m long, 0.6 m wide and 0.7 m deep, above which had stood a structure 4.3 m square over stone wall-footings. The limekiln was recorded as being in a poor condition. A site visit 2003 as part of a survey of limekilns of upper Donside noted that the kiln bowl measured circa 4.5 m in external dimeter, and circa 3 m internal diameter. The low draw-hole remains, with two lintels intact. The upper stonework of the kiln has been removed to circa 0.5 m above ground level.
