Full Description

Site of a castle which was described in 1790 as a square tower, one end fallen down, on a small mount surrounded by a deep ditch. OS site visit 1961 recorded the remains which comprised a rise circa 17 m in diameter and 2.5 m high, on which were two massive blocks of mortared rubble masonry, larger probably in situ and possibly part of a vault. Immediately to west of the large block was a stone and turf bank, 1.8 m long by 1 m thick by 1 m high, which may have been part of foundations of the castle. On the south, east and west sides of the mound was a ditch, mostly filled in, 5-8 m wide. These features remained until 1982 when they were removed and the site is now a levelled arable field. Mary Queen of Scots is said to have stayed at the castle on four occasions.

Period Notes
