Full Description

Site of cairns depicted as tumuli on the OS 1st edition map. The OS Name Book (1866) notes that these were traditionally the burial cairns of the slain from the Battle of Tillyangus in AD1571. Only one, Jock's Cairn remains (see NJ52SW0005) but OS site visit in 1967 found no trace of the others. Between NJ 5189 2442 and NJ 5188 2456 are the remains of an old field bank have been mistaken for cairns, but there is no evidence of a field system.
