Full Description
Geophysical survey was carried out in 2019 in the area north and west of the present castle (NJ52NW0013) following assessment in 2018. A total of 2,500 square metres were surveyed using ground penetrating radar along 286 transects. In the north lawns the 19th century trackway to the mansion was revealed, the trackway still surviving as a grass grown feature. Within the car park area (immediately north of the castle) a number of anomalies may indicate the presence of stone related to the Great Tower. A range of features were recorded on the West Lawn, including linear features which appear to relate to the known 18th century entrance track to the castle which appears to have been bounded by a wall to the east. A linear feature north of the Bell Tree (an ancient sycamore) may be the northern boundary of the entrance court shown on the 18th century estate plan, and which may gave had the tree at its centre.
