Full Description

Sandstone quarry, still in use, depicted on historic OS maps. To the north of the quarry is a smithy and harbour. The 2nd edition OS map also shows two cranes on the harbour walls. The harbour walls and smithy do not appear on current OS maps. The quarry exported sandstone via the harbour to London and other parts of England. Both harbour and quarry were owned by Sir William Gordon Cumming of Altyre. The 19th century quarry has been subsumed into the modern workings. The smithy has been reduced to grass covered footings. All that remains of the harbour are the footings of a thick wall that former the northeast and northwest sides. In a cave (Quarryman's Cave) within the quarry site (southwest of the site of the smithy) graffiti of ships and other carvings and remains of a building have been recorded (see NJ17SE0028). Remains of the quarry also recorded during site visit as part of Moray Community Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (CCZAS) in 2022.
