Full Description

Alleged site of hill fort. According to the New Statistical Account (1845), in 1840 the fort consisted of a rampart and ditch strengthened at intervals of 91.44m by round buildings of earth circa 15m in diameter. The name Damil is said to be a corruption of Danehill. OS site visit in 1968 found no trace of fortifications in what was then a cultivated field. There is no trace on the OS 1st edition map or Robertsons 1823 map. On Roy's map the area is shown as rig and furrow. The farmer in 1990 noted that the area is very stony, and very different from the rest of the farm. Two circular cups with unperforated handles, one of steatite and the other of granite, were found 'on levelling a turret of an ancient Roman cap of 25 acres on the summit of Damil'.
