Full Description

A 7 percent trial trenching evaluation was carried out by CFA in April 2008 in advance of proposed development. In total, 33 trenches were excavated. Occasional modern artefacts were noted in the topsoil and in linear drain features. No pre-modern artefacts were recovered. Evidence for burrowing animals was widespread in the better drained parts of the site. Archaeological features were recorded in Trenches 2, 9, 17, 24, 27 and 33. These comprised pits containing fills of charcoal-rich silts, topsoil-like silty sands, mixed gravels and firecracked stones. No finds were recovered. All features underlay topsoil with a depth of 0.3 m. Well defined palaeochannels and deposits of peaty silt were also recorded in most trenches, most frequent towards the east of the site.
