Full Description
Site of a chapel. A Roman catholic chapel stood in a wooded ravine to the south of Cairnfield House. It was gutted by the English in 1746 but restored by Bishop Hay in 1765. There are now no traces surviving, although an exact location cannot be given. Rev James Robertson, Preshome, Clochan, Banffshire said it stood in a valley in the area centred at NJ416 618 but he was unable to point out the exact position. The approximate siting is shown on Milne's map of 1775 of 'The Plan of the Lands of Cairnfield', where a rectangular structure is visible, the map is not accurate enough to give an exact siting.
