Full Description

Site of a large cairn within which a cist was found some time before 1864. The cist contained bones, an urn and bronze artefacts, including a bronze ring 15cm in diameter, all now lost. Also found were two bronze Iron Age terrets (rings) which were presented to the NMS in 1864 by Mr Bruce via Reverend John Christie of Kildrummy. The terrets were said to have been found in a large cairn on the farm of Hillockhead Towie many years earlier. The first terret is a cast bronze massive terret (8.9 by 7.1cm) with gently-bifurcated projection into the interior; a raised edge defines the perforation, where the stumps of an iron attachment-bar may be discerned. The second cast bronze massive terret, while similar in size to the first one, is from a different mould.

Period Notes
Note that it is unconfirmed that the terrets came from the same cairn, and even then whether they came from the cist burial or whether they represent a later deposition.
